SCAD community unites to share holiday spirit through Secret Santa program

Signs of the holiday season abound in downtown Savannah this December. Pine boughs and wreaths are draped between storefronts on Broughton Street, one of the city’s bustling areas for commerce and dining. The windows of boutiques sparkle with festive holiday displays assembled by SCAD alumni who own or manage some of the retailers. Not far from Broughton and nestled in Poetter Hall sits shopSCAD, a venue to purchase artwork created by the university’s best and brightest students, alumni, staff and professors. Read more.

SCAD Presidential Fellowships promote unparalleled opportunities for SCAD professors

Atop the highest hill within the Eternal City’s walls, the American Academy in Rome sits as a beacon to international artists and scholars. Through a SCAD Presidential Fellowship and the university’s affiliated membership at the academy, SCAD Atlanta art history professor Dr. Rosemary Erpf spent the month of April researching at the academy’s inspiring complex. While in Rome, Erpf examined the Italian Trans-avantgarde Movement - an influential group of artists that emerged in Italy during the late 1970s and continued through the 1980s. Read more.

SCAD master of architecture student strives to turn thesis from theory to reality

SCAD master of architecture students conceptualize, research, analyze, document and develop schematic architectural design solutions in their thesis classes. When Erin Rahn began research for her thesis project in June 2009 she immediately identified and related to a complaint posed by the youth of innumerable rural areas across the country: “there is nothing to do.”
This common gripe energized Rahn to design a Research Forest Community and Recreational Area for the Effingham County community, a place she feels deeply connected to through far-reaching family ties. Read more.

Larger-than-life installations by SCAD M.F.A. candidate Jason Hackenwerth enchant audiences around the globe, from South Korea to London, Paris to India. Hackenwerth’s exhibition spaces include such surprising locations as an ancient lava flow in Oregon, where renowned arts festivals, retailers, museums and civic organizations commission Hackenwerth to create complex sculptural balloon constructions that are sometimes whimsical and other times vexing. Whoopi Goldberg delivers 2011 commencement address and heralds SCAD on ‘The View’

Whoopi Goldberg is smitten with SCAD. The acclaimed actress, comedian and cultural provocateur delivered the Savannah College of Art and Design’s 2011 commencement ceremony address in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, and later championed the university live on “The View.”
On Saturday, June 4, Goldberg charmed audiences at the Savannah Civic Center before taking the stage for an evening ceremony at the Georgia World Congress Center. During her speech in Savannah, Goldberg noted the inclusive and inspiring university environment at SCAD. “When I was a kid I dreamed of this place: a place where film and media and liberal arts and design and fashion and architecture could live,” she said. Leading game design professionals to speak at GDX and share firsthand experiences

Scheduled for May 13 in Savannah, the 2011 Game Developers eXchange will unite SCAD students and game enthusiasts with talented professionals immersed in the game industry.

SCAD Working Class Studio intern Corey Green delivers winning design in ShelterPop online competition

SCAD B.F.A. industrial design student Corey Green from Yates Center, Kansas, is serious about getting down to business. In the past month he has won a premier design contest, viewed his product design on display at a renowned retail fair in New York City and perched his blog post on the homepage of a leading décor website. With his lively schedule - reminiscent of that of a famed designer in the home furnishings industry - Green is taking solid steps toward his ultimate career goal: managing his own company.
