President Obama visited Cannon Falls yesterday.
Yes, I know. This is old news…yesterday’s news…not news at all.
But what you may not know is that Cannon Falls made its mark on social media history during Obama’s visit. While I cannot support this claim with 100 percent certainty, I’d presume Mr. President prompted the first-ever appearance of “Cannon Falls” on Twitter’s national trend list.
President Obama also launched a FourSquare account for his rural tour, and Cannon Falls was its premier check-in point.
This may not actually be a historic event, but every time I read a journalist’s report that mentioned Hi-Quality Bakery my craving for donuts and scones revved up immediately. It seems most reporters indulged in Cannon Falls’ sweet treats; thank goodness Julie decided to open the store on a Monday despite the fact that it’s her day of respite.

Finally, check out this Star Tribune video. The compilation includes a certain English teacher from Northfield who has taught most of Cannon Falls a little about grammar and a lot about life.
This is the biggest thing to happen at Hannah’s Bend park since my family reunion last month!
I hope my city town represents itself well. I have a feeling Cannon Falls is going to see a population surge for the few hours our Commander-in-Chief comes a-calling. I mean, when you start out at a population of 4,000 it’s not that difficult to raise your numbers exponentially. Yay!
When I drove through Cannon Falls last night I saw my downtown flooding. I snapped a few photos before I headed out of town but apparently things have only gotten worse since my departure.
The Red Wing Republican Eagle reports that the Cannon River rose about 4 feet between 6 p.m. Thursday and this morning. Apparently some of Byllesby Dam’s trip gates also opened due to high waters overnight.
I feel bad for local high school students because class was dismissed due to flooding around 1 p.m. today and tonight’s Homecoming football game and dance were cancelled. Homecoming was one of my favorite memories from senior year and hope students find a way to make up for the missed occasion.
I was perusing my local newspaper today when I came across an interesting anecdote. Evidently my local coffeehouse can boast about a brush with fame.
Writer/radio host (and fellow Minnesotan) Garrison Keillor tried some of Burly Coffee’s brew and gave it a Prairie Home Companion style endorsement:
“This is the best coffee in Minnesota. Which means it’s not bad. It could be worse.”
That simple phrase can apply to not only my hometown but the entire state. The Twins? Not too bad. The weather? Could be worse. The accent? Da best in da Midwest, dontcha know.
